These works of art are some of the more recent pieces that were in the show. As a whole they represent the transformative experience of becoming a parent and the infinite potential of childhood. Solo Exhibition at Gallery 12 (Moncton)

Hello dear friends!

Today I am writing to announce that I will have a solo exhibition at Gallery 12 in Moncton this month! The exhibition is entitled “Now That I’m Older” and I am very excited about it!

The Gallery is in the Aberdeen Cultural Center in Room 11 which is at 140 Botsford Street in Moncton, New Brunswick.

The exhibition will run between February 14th until February 26th.

There will be no opening event unfortunately and timing does not permit me being there in the flesh when the exhibition opens (I live in Fredericton), but the Gallery is open to the public Monday to Saturday between 10 AM and 10 PM.

My exhibition will be officially up at the same time as this year’s ART EN BOITE, which is an art print fundraising event happening each year during Valentines Day. It is organized by the IMAGO Printmaking Studio at the center.

Exhibition in Campbellton!

BIG FOOT is Back Home!

Dear friends,

The work of art that I created for the CRYPTID ENCOUNTERS group exhibition at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles just arrived back home! It was a cool exhibition and I had fun creating this piece.

Not only do I love everything related to cryptozoology and mysteries, the process for creating this piece was fascinating and complicated. My long walks in the forest and the infinite hours I have spent with Robert Stack while watching Unsolved Mysteries my whole life did help for the inspiration, but creating the inner frame piece was something else! I wasn’t sure what to do but when I got the idea to recreate the iconic foot print that gave the Big Foot his name, it was clear that I had to do it! But how?

After I painted a woodland scenery with our elusive monster lurking in the background, I sculpted the foot print in Sculpey clay. I first had to make a flat, rectangular piece with the clay so that it would fit in the frame. For this I used a few sculpting tools and my bare hands. I then framed it and mounted it on the canvas with heavy acrylic gel and staples on the back. It took a while for me to figure out my approach with this one but I am quite fond of the final product and I hope you like it too!

The Forest For The Trees is Back Home

My painting “The Forest For The Trees” is finally back in my hands after having been in the group exhibition EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK at the La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles!

I did make a small change on it upon receiving it, I repainted the clouds at the bottom. They bothered me a little bit and now I am much happier with it and I love it.

So here it is!

Art Classes at UNB Art Center

This month I will start giving acrylic painting classes at the UNB Art Center in Fredericton.

My classes will be for beginners who want to learn some basics of acrylic painting I will focus on color theory, composition and every little thing in between which will enable you to create your very own vision on canvas.

The fall classes will be on Wednesdays between October 23rd until November 27th between 6PM - 8PM and the winter classes will be on Tuesdays between February 4th until March 18th between 6PM - 8PM.

The classes take place at the UNB Memorial Hall at 9 Bailey Drive, Room 26. You can register HERE if you are in the area and are interested. I will also start giving classes at the Charlotte Street Art Center in the month of March.

On another note, I am working on a new series for a small group exhibition in Campbellton for next month which will be officially announced soon. This show will have a lot of new works with a few older ones and I am thinking a lot in terms of patterns and abstractions lately, with my usual artwork within artwork of course. We will see where it goes…

New Works

I recently visited my artist friend Guy Vézina in his studio for a painting session, he did a portrait of me for a big project he is working on and I improvised a landscape. We are planning a collaboration soon, but that is not the reason I am writing today. The small landscape that I was working on that I finished at home and entitled “Self-Titled” sent me on a journey to create a series of 8” x 10” paintings. I created four pieces so far and I have 6 new ones in progress. I am not certain how many I’ll make and I am still looking for a space to exhibit them, but in the mean time I thought I would share what I have done so far.

The Forest For The Trees

Every year, the LA LUZ DE JESUS GALLERY in Los Angeles has a group exhibition called EVERTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK (EBTKS) in which they feature over 100 artists exhibiting works of art that are 12" x 12". I am very happy to be apart of this year's EBTKS! For the exhibition I created a painting entitled "The Forest For The Trees", which comes from the saying "I can not see the forest for the trees", meaning to fail to see the whole picture of an issue and to get lost in the details. Here it is!

BIGFOOT

Dear friends, here is the work of art that I created for the CRYPTID ENCOUNTERS group exhibition at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles! I had fun creating this piece. CRYPTID Group Exhibition @ Hive Gallery (Los Angeles)

Hi friends! In August I will be part of a group exhibition entitled CRYPTIDS at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles! As the title suggests, the exhition is about cryptids, which are the many elusive, legendary creatures that many claim to have seen but we can't quite prove their existance. These include Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and many more. This is a topic that has always fascinated me so I was delighted to create a piece for it which will be revealed after the opening. The opening night is on Saturday, August 3rd from 8 PM to 11PM. If you are in the Los Angeles area, go check it out!

Mount Baker

My wife Kristal is originally from Victoria, British Columbia and I wanted to paint somekind of landscape that linked to Victoria. Upon doing some research I kept falling on photos of Mount Baker, which is in Washington DC, USA, but it can be seen from Victoria BC and it is a popular site. I decided to paint Mount Baker my way. The original was done around 2019, but I revited it this year, almost completely repainted it and added the framed eye, because again, everywhere you look, something is looking back...

Beat But Undefeated

I decided to created a mini series of three based on my "Completely Bananas" piece. This is my second piece, "Beat But Undefeated". It's not just a piece about boxing but about the life of a man, both physically, mentally and spiritually.

COMPLETELY BANANAS

In 2019, controversial Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan taped a banana to the wall at Miami's Art Basel and it sold for $120,000. This created an explosion in the art world without a doubt and it was all over the news. In response to it all I had made a realistic painting of the taped banana on canvas with vulgarities written on it. This was my "middle finger" attitude to the absurdity of it all. This frustration was not towards the artist himself, Cattelan has done some very interesting work and is known to be controversial. In fact, come to think of it, there was some brilliance to it all since it was all over the news. There is no such thing as bad publicity, right? Was it all a planned, publicity stunt or was it done in the spur of the moment? Who knows?

My piece was rather a protest towards the art world as a whole. While on the surface the whole thing is kind of artistically funny, it can leave a bitter aftertaste to some as so many incredibly talented artists struggle to make a living with their artwork. It's hard for some of us to digest that a rotting banana would get a $120,000 investment when many great artists struggle to sell anything at all. I have spent a lot of time throughout the years reassessing my views on such “works of art”, if we can call it that. To me, an artist needs to be making art and must have gone through the pains of learning how to make art. While the artist is creating art and getting their hands dirty, some shenanigans are not only tolerable, they are welcomed if they are clever, but to what degree should one who only does shenanigans survive in the art world? Much discussion can be had on the subject. I think we can all agree that if someone who can not make art taped a banana on a gallery wall and sold it for $120,000, it might be funny for a week but it would be ultimately unacceptable and the art world would have to admit that and reject it lest the whole art world and all true artists be utterly shamed. However, if an established, talented artist tapes a banana on the wall, it is acceptable shenanigans, but what does it say about the art world as a whole? The truth is that I don’t know and I am still unsure on how I feel about it.

My “commentary” painting was featured on the news with a French radio interview HERE. The joke was that I put my painting at $120,000. sadly no one bought it!

Years later I dug the painting up after moving and realized that while I still very much liked the banana and the overall message, I no longer liked the vulgarity and the negative vibe that it projected. I have changed a lot since then and I decided to revisit the piece with new eyes. After thinking about it for a while, I came up with this idea, which I believe still conveys the message that regardless of how you view this, it is completely crazy. This revised piece incorporates my new approach of “frames within frames”.
